This reminder can also be timely in seasons of rejoicing. Even when "life is good," we need to remember that comfort and happiness in this life are not our ultimate goal. We were made for eternity.

Ever since “Shout to the Lord,” Hillsong has been writing some of the most prominent songs in contemporary Christian worship. Songs like “Mighty to Save,” “From the Inside Out,” and “Hosanna” have become familiar tunes in churches all over the world.

Over the last few years, Hillsong has started a side-project in which they take some of these well-known songs and arrange them in a more pared-down, acoustic style. Instead of fat synth pads, heavy guitar delays, and big drums meant to fill a stadium, you will hear acoustic guitars, strings, and lighter percussion meant for a more intimate setting like a chapel - hence the name of the project, “Hillsong Chapel.”

This month we have been using “Yahweh” (the first of two full-length albums by Hillsong Chapel) as our walk-in music at Compass Bible Church. Especially if you enjoy Hillsong’s music, I would encourage you to check out this project and these fresh yet beautiful arrangements of these songs.

Chris Tomlin is arguably the most prominent worship songwriter in the world right now. If you attend an evangelical church this weekend, you are very likely to hear one of his songs (6 of the CCLI Top 25 songs are at least co-written by Tomlin.) Even if the name doesn’t sound familiar to you, lyrics like “Forever God is faithful / Forever God is strong” or “How great is our God / Sing with me, how great is our God” certainly will.

Therefore, the release of a new Chris Tomlin album is a noteworthy event in the worship music community because you will most likely be singing some of these songs in your church in short-order. Thankfully, Burning Lights is full of songs that will serve the purpose of congregational worship well. Here are a few of my favorite tracks:

“Lay Me Down” – Already a favorite of in True North and the 3rd9 here at Compass, this song is a great expression of surrender and sacrifice for the cause of our Lord.

“Jesus, Son of God” – We will be introducing this song to our church this weekend! It’s a wonderful anthem that praises the life, death, and resurrection of our Savior.

“Crown Him (Majesty)” – This duet with Kari Jobe is a powerful rendition of a classic hymn that focuses on the majesty of our Savior “...who died eternal life to bring

While this may be one of Tomlin’s better studio albums, it still does contain some of the more unfortunate elements of modern worship music – songs high on excitement and emotion but low on meaning and content. “God’s Great Dance Floor” typifies some of these common worship song downfalls. Thankfully, we live in an age where it’s easier than ever to skip songs.

If you are looking to listen to music that we do here at Compass Bible Church, you’ll find several quality songs on this record. You’ll also hear it as you walk in and out of our services this month, and you can find it right here at our Compass Books store.

As Christians, we should be ambitious about advancing the cause of our Lord through the progress of the gospel. We sang a song that expressed that desire this weekend. The chorus says,

This last week featured an election in our country, and it seems that most of the country is either very excited or very upset. Thankfully, we as Christians can avoid either extreme because we know who the King of the Universe is. No matter who runs the country - God is in charge. That's why we sing,
